With war ravaging Ukraine, the country’s most vulnerable are at risk. There are approximately 100,000 children in Ukraine’s orphanages, which are being targeted by shells, missiles and bombs. Beyond that, where orphanage staff are fleeing, there are large numbers of children left to face the dangers of war alone, without the support of their families.

In April 2022, the Rex Maughan Forever Giving Foundation donated $50,000 to Hope and Homes for Children to support the nonprofit organization’s initiatives in protecting children and families torn apart by the war in Ukraine. With the help of this donation, Hope and Homes for Children has supported over 4,000 families and 8,000 children.

Additionally, Hope and Homes for Children is looking at rebuilding family-style homes that were bombed and shelled to keep Ukrainian children from being re-institutionalized, and it is protecting children through emergency foster care and small group homes.

While Hope and Homes for Children is also aiding refugees in the neighboring countries of Romania and Moldova, in Ukraine, it is primarily focused on providing cash assistance, food, water and protection to those who need it in Lviv, Kyiv and Dnipro. In Kyiv, the organization is giving emergency provisions to children and parents with disabilities, while in Dnipro, they helped evacuate 63 children to Romania. Hope and Homes for Children is committed to reaching 14,000 caretakers, parents and children in Ukraine while maintaining its existing programs to keep families together and support its global advocacy work.

These actions are part of Hope and Homes for Children’s overall mission to be the catalyst for the global elimination of institutional care for children. Through a dedicated strategy, the organization seeks to lead and support the national reform of childcare and protection systems in the countries they work in. Their goal is to showcase evidence that orphanages are an unacceptable way of caring for children on a broader scale — and ultimately create change globally.

This donation is part of the Rex Maughan Forever Giving Foundation’s vision to bring hope and healing to women, children and communities around the world through better access to food, shelter, medical care and disaster relief.
